About Dr Christopher Steinfort

Dr Christopher Steinfort is a Specialist Respiratory and Sleep Physician with extensive experience treating all areas of the lung, breathing and sleep health.  After graduating from the University of Melbourne Medical School in 1978, Dr Steinfort was admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1984, followed by the American College of Chest Physicians in 1992.

While undertaking specialist training at Brompton Hospital London, Dr Steinfort worked in the Host Defence Unit completing extensive research in Bronchiectasis under the guidance of Bronchiectasis specialist Professor Peter Cole.  In 1987 Dr Steinfort returned from England and commenced specialist practice in Geelong, both at The Geelong Hospital as a visiting medical specialist and also in private  practice, making him now the most senior Respiratory and Sleep Physician in the region.  Dr Steinfort established the Respiratory Medicine Unit and Lung Function Laboratory located at the University Hospital Geelong, along with Geelong’s first Sleep Laboratory located in Geelong Private Hospital. He now runs his Lung function laboratory from his rooms at 156 Bellerine St, Geelong. 

Whilst running a busy private practice in Geelong over the last 30 years, Dr Steinfort has maintained an active role in research through his involvement in numerous clinical trials and published research articles in Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Sarcoidosis, Sleep Medicine and drug induced Lung Disease.

Dr Steinfort has enjoyed living, working and raising a family in Geelong over the last 30 years and is a passionate supporter of the Geelong Football Club.

Dr Steinfort has an appointment as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at University Hospital Geelong and St. John of God Hospital, where he conducts bedside clinical teaching with Year 3 and 4 Deakin University Medical School students. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society, European Respiratory Society, Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand and Australasian Sleep Association.

Dr Steinfort teaches students from Australian Catholic University in his private practice, guiding these students in the practice of clinical medicine.

Dr Steinfort delivers talks to the General Practice community on a regular basis, discussing many conditions in Respiratory Medicine, including Asthma and COPD.
